A survey conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and weights and measures offices in 37 jurisdictions in 1996 resulted in a report that was released about the accuracy of prices in stores with electronic checkout scanners. Another study was conducted in 1998 as a follow-up to the 1996 report. The 1998 press releases, reports, and articles are linked below. The 1996 report is no longer available on the web, although you may obtain a copy from the Federal Trade Commission at: Public Reference, FTC, Washington, D.C. 20580, (202) 326-2222.
