Mary H. Saunders is the Chief of the Standards Services Division (SSD) in NIST's Technology Services. The Division provides policy support for standards and conformity assessment activities for federal agencies. SSD administers programs in Laboratory Accreditation, Standards Coordination and Conformity, and Global Standards and Information, as well as the implementation of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act of 1995.

Ms. Saunders chairs the Interagency Committee on Standards Policy, which is charged with coordinating federal agency standards-related activities. She is also the government co-chair of the ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel, which serves as a private/public sector forum for information-sharing on homeland security standards issues as well as providing a framework for facilitating the development and enhancement of standards in key homeland security areas. She continues to be active in both domestic and international standardization and conformity assessment, as a member of the National and International Policy Committees of the American National Standards Institute, and of National Cooperation for Laboratory Accreditation (NACLA).

Ms. Saunders joined NIST in July 1993, having served for four years in the International Trade Administration of the Department of Commerce as Director of the Internal Market Staff, Office of European Community Affairs, where she developed a program to track developments in Europe in the areas of product safety standards, testing and certification and accreditation requirements, and ISO 9000 registration and accreditation. While at NIST, she has served in several different positions, including Chief of the Global Standards and Information Program and Program Analyst in the Office of the NIST Director. Ms. Saunders received the NIST Bronze Medal in 1995 and 2001, and the Department of Commerce Silver Medal in 1999 and 2000.

Ms. Saunders has been with the Department of Commerce for 19 years. She has an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and completed her graduate work at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.
