Arogyaswami J Paulraj

Arogyaswami Paulraj is a Professor at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University since 1993, where he supervises the Smart Antennas Research Group (SARG). His group has developed many key fundamentals of a new field called space-time communications theory and has helped shape a worldwide research and development focus on this technology.

Paulraj's research has spannedseveral disciplines, emphasizing estimation theory (1970-75), sensorsignal processing (1974-86), parallel computer architectures/algorithms(1986-90) and space-time wireless communications (1993-todate). Hisengineering experience includes development of large sonar systems (1971-82,India), massively parallel computers (1987-91, India), Airborne / ISARradars (1987-92, India) and broadband wireless systems (1999-2002, USA).

Paulraj is the author ofover 300 research papers and holds twenty three issued US patents inspace-time wireless. He has edited four books and authored a text book– “ Introduction to Space-time Wireless Communications”published by Cambridge University Press in 2003. He is also on the editorialboard of Wireless Networks.

In 1999, Paulraj foundedIospan Wireless Inc – which pioneered MIMO-OFDM fixed wirelesstechnology. The company raised $ 70 Million of venture funds and developedlayer one and two chipsets. Iospan was acquired by Intel Corporationin 2002.

Paulraj has received manynational awards for his work in India for the development of sonar systemsand parallel computers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the IndianNational Academy of Engineering. Paulraj currently serves on Board ofDirectors or Advisors of several companies and universities. He receivedthe IEEE Technical Achievement Award in 2003.

Paulraj is widely acknowledgedas the pioneer of multiple antenna communications. He is a frequentplenary speaker at many conferences. He is also currently an advisorymember of several research consortiums studying 4G wireless technologiesin Europe, Japan and India.
